Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner model was first produced in 1953, and was shown at the Basel watch fair in 1954. The first watches produced did not have the merceded style hands and the first refs used were 6204 & 6205.
In 1950 the ref 6200 was introduced with the mercedes style hands and an oversized crown.

Rolex soon revised its Submariner range and produced the 6536 and 6538. These watches had improved 1030 cal movements, including a chronometer version in some 6536 models all with the Mercedes hands, Submariner logo and depth rating printed on the dial. By the early 1960s, these models gave way to the 5508 and 5510. All of these early Submariners used either gilt (6200, 6204, 6205) or gilt/silver gilt (6536, 6538) printing on glossy black dials. Radium paint was used for the luminous indices.
The next wave of Submariners, the 5512 (chronometer version) and 5513 (non-chronometer) marked a major change in the appearance of the Rolex design. Crown guards were added to the side of the case to provide protection for the winding/setting mechanism
.

The Following Reference Numbers which are located on the side of the case between the lugs at the no.12 position were used on Rolex Submariner Watches:
