Rolex Airking & Airking Date

The Rolex Air-King series was first developed by Rolex's founder, Hans Wilsdorf, as a tribute to the large number of fighter pilots who used Rolex watches during the Battle of Britain.

After WWII a new range of watches was introduced; “Air Tiger”, “Air Lion”; Air Giant” and “Air King”; they all used the Rolex 15 jewel 10.5 hunter manual wind movement.
The Air Giant was the largest of the range, they were all available in steel, steel & gold or low carat (9 or10k) gold.

This collection were in production from around 1948 to the early 1950s but were never very popular and were dropped from therange. Only the Air King survived and it was upgraded with an automatic movement. Since then the Air King has always remained in the Rolex catalogue as the least expensive gent’s Oyster Perpetual.
Now it is only available in stainless steel, but up to the late 60s it was available in low carat gold, steel & gold and in a gold filled.

The Following Reference Numbers which are located on the side of the case between the lugs at the no.12 position were used on Rolex Airking Watches:
